Nikola Tesla was born in 1856 in what is now Croatia. From a young age, he showed an incredible memory and a talent for building things. He studied engineering and physics, becoming fascinated with electricity. In 1884, he moved to the United States with almost no money but a mind full of brilliant ideas. He briefly worked for Thomas Edison before setting out on his own to develop his own inventions. His early struggles only made him more determined to bring his visionary ideas to life.

Unlike Edison's direct current (DC), which could only travel short distances, Tesla's AC system allowed electricity to be transmitted over long distances safely and efficiently. He also invented the Tesla coil, which is still used in radio technology today. In 1895, he and George Westinghouse built the first hydroelectric power plant at Niagara Falls, proving that AC power could light up entire cities.
